The weather was excellent that Saturday morning on 5 August 2006. A record number of 612 secondary school students gathered at SMJK Catholic High School for the 10th National SPM Bible Knowledge Oral Quiz. They came from the Klang Valley, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Johor and as far as Labuan.

This quiz started as a Christian Fellowship activity of a school in Petaling Jaya ten years ago. Today it is a national-level competition drawing participants from around the country. This year's event was jointly organized by the Malayan Christian Schools' Council (MCSC) and Scripture Union (SU).

It was a day of thanksgiving to God for His faithfulness in bringing this quiz through to its tenth year.

The excitement was simply electrifying amongst the participants together with parents, Christian Fellowship advisors, Bible Knowledge teachers and ex-students who came back to encourage the students as well as render assistance as invigilators.

It was truly amazing to see young boys and girls passionate about the Word of God. As the quiz progressed into the higher rounds and the questions got more challenging one fact was obvious - the teams knew their text very well. They gave prompt and accurate answers.

The participants were divided between those who were taking BK as a subject in the SPM (Forms 4 & 5) and those who were not, participants coming from Forms One to Six. The judges were Ms. Moey Yoke Lai, Ms. Esther Richards and Dr. Wong Chow Lan.

Joseph Tan Meng Ern and Philip Tan Wynn Ian from Methodist Boys' School, Kuala Lumpur emerged as champions and walked away with the MCSC trophy. Following close as first Runners-up were Geh U Shen and Loh Kit Yan from SMK Seri Bintang Utara, Kuala Lumpur. Second Runners-up were from SMK Methodist, Ipoh represented by Tan Jin Ern and Paul Aun. All participants received certificates of participation.

Indeed, the Word of God is real and it continues to go forth in our lives, especially in our young people who study the Word diligently. Even as they study it for the quiz or prepare for the SPM examination the WORD will surely have an impact in their lives that is of eternal value.

We encourage more secondary students to sign up for the SPM Bible Knowledge paper.
