October/November 2010 - Persaudaraan Belia Methodist Malaysia Leadership Conference

Cum 2nd Annual General meeting

Persatuan Belia Methodist Malaysia (PBMM) 1st leadership Conference, “The Summit” was held on the 16th October 2010 – 18th October 2010 at Wisma Methodist, KL. 42 participants from 6 different Annual Conferences attended this leadership conference.
The purpose of this conference was, firstly, to gather all the youth from the various Annual Conferences together to have a time of sharing and fellowship. Secondly the New PBMM Executive Committee 2010/2011 was to be elected. The first night started with a short sharing on “Youth Voices” by Michael William, the Executive Youth Director of the Methodist Church. Michael showed us 3 videos on youth outside the world and their thoughts, thus challenging us to be the salt and light that would impact the society. We ended the night with a time of prayer led by Rev Chieng Yu Hoo from the CAC.
On the second day, we had Rev Dr Hermen Shastri from the Council of Churches of Malaysia, CCM to share with us on “Wesleyan Spirituality”. We had a good session of sharing on Methodism and shaping our Youth following Wesleyan Spirituality. Then we had a short time of discussion with our own Annual Conference members based on the legacy that John Wesley had left us. In the afternoon two workshops were held simultaneously. All participants were given the option of joining either the workshop on Evangelism Training by Christianity Explosion (XEE) or Social Concern by Malaysian Care.
I joined the workshop on XEE Evangelism Training. This training was conducted by Elaine Tang and team from Evangelism Explosion (EE) Malaysia. During this workshop, she shared on how we can use this EE Training to evangelise to our friends. Since this is only a few hours workshop, we learnt one of their models of Evangelism which was on ‘God’.
The other workshop was on a model of creating a program for social engagement in our local youth groups. Sister Oii Kiah Hui from Malaysian Care showed its model of engagement to various groups of people in our Malaysian society and allowed us to dialogue with her on bringing this model into our own groups.
Both workshops were well received by the participants. It has encouraged us to not just plan and conduct meetings for our own members but also to think of our mission for the youth for the world at large.
The AGM was held during the conference to elect the new Executive Committees. It was very encouraging to see the willingness of all who were present to not only participate in the conference but also willing to take up the leadership roles of the PBMM for 2010/11.

Below are the newly elected committees for Year 2010/2011.

President : Ong Jen Tak (CAC)
Vice President I : Tang Yew Hwang (SCAC)
Vice President II : Eklis (SIAC)
Secretary I : William Kwong (TRAC)

The conference ended with a closing challenge by Ms Jenny Qua, the Executive Secretary of the General Conference. She challenges us to strive to not only by beginning well but to end strong in our service and mission for our Lord through the PBMM and the local youth groups. The 3 days 2 night of PBMM Conference was great! It was a good time sharing and fellowship with members of all the Annual Conferences. I hope that this partnership and friendship for the youth of Malaysia would continue and bear fruit for the glory of Christ.
